I received my TomTom iPhone Car Kit last Friday. I have to say I have had only one chance to use the TT Car Kit but I was really disappointed. First, my very thin Griffin iPhone case had to be removed before it would fit in the TT Car Kit. Second, when the iPhone is connected to the TT Car Kit and the TomTom application is running the TomTom application continued to notify me of turn's after I had passed the turn. I did experience this often with just the application running but I expected the TT Car Kit to resolve this problem. Unfortunately I continue to get a weak signal, so weak that I had my doubts that there really was an internal GPS in the TT Car Kit but the TomTom web site claims there is an internal GPS in the TT Car Kit. On the box it claims 'Enhanced GPS Signal', nothing of a built in GPS.
I was not impressed with the Bluetooth hands free calling either. I made two calls and had a difficult time hearing both calls. However, when I asked the recipient of the call how I sounded they said it was ok.
My wife is so busy at work she uses the drive back & forth to work to catch up on her phone calls. For me the safety benefits of Hands-Free Calling would have been worth the price of the TT Car Kit.
I will experiment more with the TT Car Kit but if it continues to perform like the initial test I will be returning it for a refund.
I was really hoping the TomTom Car Kit would be a great experience.

Huge Error.
I made a grave error this morning and blamed Carbon Copy Cloner for a problem related to the HFS+ filesystem. I should have contacted the developer before writing my comment.
I then went on to promote SuperDuper as a great backup utility, which it is and went on to dismiss Carbon Copy Cloner as not being as reliable as SuperDuper. However, after the developer spent a good amount of time explaining to me what the problem was I have to retract my comment of Carbon Copy Cloner, it was all wrong.
So in retrospect I really screwed up. I think both Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper work as advertised. You the user can decide which you like best. Personally I like the incremental backup of Carbon Copy Cloner and I think it is faster but will continue to use both as part of my backup ritual.

Beta Operating System upgrade fails!
I have a bad habit of installing beta software on my main computer and this week I attempted to install a new beta version of my operating system. I can't talk about the beta software because I signed a non-disclosure agreement. My years of installing beta software did teach me one thing, do a complete backup of the startup drive before installing any beta software on it. I did that earlier in the day as part of my daily backup ritual.
Over the years I have lost very important data due to not backing up in a timely fashion and the past few years I have relentlessly been backing up my data daily to multiple sources. My primary backup solution consists of a daily complete backup of my startup drive including operating system and data. I alternate two backup drives from day to day using two different backup apps, SuperDuper (SD) & Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC). However, I always use the same backup software on the same backup drive. I also have a backup drive for Time Machine and lastly a DroboPro that is updated twice daily for extra data protection of my personal data, music and videos.
My relentless backups paid off today because when the beta operating system install completed it notified me that it failed to upgrade properly. I rebooted and everything appeared to work fine, the operating system version was correct. However, after a couple hours of use I started to wonder & worry about the next beta and what problems my arise from continuing to go ahead with the current install, since it claimed it failed. My betta (Pun) judgment gets the best of me and I decide to revert back to before the upgrade of the operating system using my backup drives.
The CCC backup disk was the newest, so obviously I would use the CCC backup disk to restore my operating system from. So I rebooted from the CCC backup, launched Disk utility, erased my startup drive and then launched CCC to restore my operating system and data to the startup drive. CCC successfully completed the restore and after rebooting to the startup drive I was verifying my data and making sure all was well when I noticed some of the data was old and some of it was days old. It appeared that CCC wasn't updating all the files during my backups. Now remember, I backup every other day with this disk and software, so I couldn't understand how the data could be old. CCC also created a folder called lost + found and placed a bunch of node files in it, whatever node files are.
This was not good, I was baffled and now I am panicking a bit because I don't want to do a clean install and have to manually copy all my files, it is time consuming. Not like I have a lot to do but I do have better things to do. And whenever I do a clean install sometime in the future I realize I forgot to copy a file and at that point I already started using the backup disk again so the file is not available, this never fails.
Fortunately, I do have the SuperDuper backup drive but that data is a day older, but what's my alternative, clean install, ugh! So I got out my SuperDuper backup disk, rebooted from that disk, erased and restored from the SD disk to my startup drive with success. Rebooted, verified my important data and everything looked good. I lost a bit of work I completed the past couple days but I could get most of that from the DroboPro. I felt much more comfortable moving ahead with the SuperDuper backup.

I am ashamed to be an American!
Yes, I am going to say it, I ashamed to call myself an american. We are supposed to be the world's most powerful country and we as americans should be setting an example of honesty, compassion and integrity to all other countries on this planet. Yet for the past century we have been secretly involved in numerous covert operations to over throw governments that don't follow our Foreign Policy. We have completely failed at setting an example of integrity to the world. I'll probably get a lot of haters for stating that I am ashamed to be an american.
First for the last century the US Government & CIA have been involved in numerous covert operations to overthrow/coups the governments of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Nicaragua, Guatemala, South Vietnam, Chile, Grenada, Haiti, Panama and of late Iraq. Even back in the 1800's the US Government conspired to remove Queen Liliuokalini from her throne in a step toward annexing the island of Hawaii so the we could get a piece of the protected sugar market. Over the decades this has become a pattern of American foreign policy. The US government will claim that it's policy is necessary for the stability of the USA.
More often than not, our claims to protect the rights of the citizens of the said countries is total bullshit and is for another agenda altogether. If the USA is intervening or going to war with a country on the behalf of the protection of the citizens of that said country in the name of democracy then why is it we ignore the citizens of Darfur? I am not saying that every war the USA has been involved in was wrong. I don't know much about all the wars we have been involved in but I do know in the case of World War II the USA attempted to remain neutral for as long as it could before getting involved in that war and had we not entered the war the outcome may have been much different. On the other end of the spectrum we have the Vietnam war.
My point is we don't walk the talk of democracy and our elected officials appear to change our Foreign Policy to fit their agenda, we are hypocrites. George W Bush supposedly went to war with Iraq to stop Saddam Hussein from producing weapons of mass destruction that never even existed on the heels of the tragedy of 911. He coined the phrase "Axis of Evil" to describe those countries that support terrorism and then used this as a justification to fight the War on Terror. Ex President Bush has been criticized internationally and targeted by the global anti-war campaigns, particularly for his administration's foreign policy. Views of him within the international community are more negative than previous American Presidents.
I believe his agenda to go to war with Iraq was primarily the vast oil reserve's, daddy's failure to finish the job the first time, provide proof to the world that he & the USA is a force to be reckoned with. Here we are, 8 years later and I believe that the citizens of Iraq were better off with Saddam as their leader. When we finally get out of Iraq not much will have changed. There will be thousands of unnecessary deaths and a change in leadership, a leadership that will probably have less control of the country than Saddam did.
Ahh, did I mention the debt the USA accumulated from the war and the unnecessary deaths of all our brave soldiers who died for the ego/legacy of an idiot George W Bush. I am embarrassed that he was "elected" president twice and then he was a puppet of Donald Rumsfeld and Dickhead Cheney. The monies the USA spent on the War on Terror could have been put to good use addressing the issue's of healthcare reform, poverty, education, addictions and homelessness.
So why am I embarrassed to be an american? Instead of explaining this in my own words, Bill Mahr explains it best. in his New Rule from July 24th 2009:

It used to be that there were some services and institutions so vital to our nation that they were exempt from market pressures. Some things we just didn't do for money. The United States always defined capitalism, but it didn't used to define us. But now it's becoming all that we are.

But now our war zones are dominated by private contractors and mercenaries who work for corporations. War is not supposed to turn a profit, but our wars have become boondoggles for weapons manufacturers and connected civilian contractors.

Television news is another area that used to be roped off from the profit motive. When Walter Cronkite died last week, it was odd to see news anchor after news anchor talking about how much better the news coverage was back in Cronkite's day. I thought, "Gee, if only you were in a position to do something about it."
But maybe they aren't. Because unlike in Cronkite's day, today's news has to make a profit like all the other divisions in a media conglomerate. That's why it wasn't surprising to see the CBS Evening News broadcast live from the Staples Center for two nights this month, just in case Michael Jackson came back to life and sold Iran nuclear weapons. In Uncle Walter's time, the news division was a loss leader. Making money was the job of The Beverly Hillbillies. And now that we have reporters moving to Alaska to hang out with the Palin family, the news is The Beverly Hillbillies.
And finally, there's health care. It wasn't that long ago that when a kid broke his leg playing stickball, his parents took him to the local Catholic hospital, the nun put a thermometer in his mouth, the doctor slapped some plaster on his ankle and you were done. The bill was $1.50, plus you got to keep the thermometer.
But like everything else that's good and noble in life, some Wall Street wizard decided that hospitals could be big business, so now they're run by some bean counters in a corporate plaza in Charlotte. In the U.S. today, three giant for-profit conglomerates own close to 600 hospitals and other health care facilities. They're not hospitals anymore; they're Jiffy Lubes with bedpans. America's largest hospital chain, HCA, was founded by the family of Bill Frist, who perfectly represents the Republican attitude toward health care: it's not a right, it's a racket. The more people who get sick and need medicine, the higher their profit margins. Which is why they're always pushing the Jell-O.
Because medicine is now for-profit we have things like "recision," where insurance companies hire people to figure out ways to deny you coverage when you get sick, even though you've been paying into your plan for years.
When did the profit motive become the only reason to do anything? When did that become the new patriotism? Ask not what you could do for your country, ask what's in it for Blue Cross/Blue Shield."

Wy wife is disturbed!
I met my wife Gail at an AA meeting in 1984 when we were both relatively new to sobriety, a couple months clean. Relationships are not recommended in the 1st year of sobriety but we managed to stay together and have been together ever since. Statistically the odds where against us and I don't recommend anyone new to sobriety to get involved with another member of any recovery program during the first year. This year Gail will be sober for 25 years and I am very proud of her. I can't say the same for myself. I have had a few slips over the years but that is another story.
She got involved in addictions treatment and went back to school to get her Bachelors degree and then her master degree. She has been deeply committed to helping addicts for the past 20 years. She is extremely smart and I am proud of how dedicated she is to her job and how much she has grown.
My wife has a very stressful job and since I can't work she took a part time job doing groups for the same company that she works full time for, creating additional stress for her. I feel bad and helpless that she has to work two jobs to pay my medical expenses. Our health insurance and all my copay's for my prescription's average almost $1300 a month out of our pocket.
Gail has been by my side through thick and thin. I spend anywhere from 10 to 30 days a year in the hospital and she drives the hour to hospital every single day, never fail. And during the week days she works all day and then comes to Massachusetts General Hospital to visit me. Most of nights I have to force her to leave the hospital because MGH is not very strict at enforcing their 8:00PM visiting hours ending. I get nervous that she has to drive the 40 miles home alone and in the dark from Boston. I couldn't ask for a more dedicated, loving wife.
Anyway, the Sunday morning I happened to mention that I don't believe in God anymore and she was really disturbed by my statement. She believed that we would spend our eternity together and I shattered her dream by telling her this. We watch Curb Your Enthusiasm and there was an episode that we watched a few years ago where Larry & Cheryl were talking about being together in eternity after death. Larry was against it and to make his wife happy he eventually conceded. Now I am in the same position as Larry. Gail & I made the same promise to each other. Sunday I tell her my beliefs and she is surprised and hurt. As the day went on I could see that she was dwelling on my statement and she was sad about my not believing in God.
I love my wife and don't want to hurt her, nor cause any additional stress so Sunday night I lied to her and told her that I did believe in God and not to worry, I was just frustrated with everything and didn't mean what I had said about not believing.
Am I wrong in deceiving her about my beliefs?

Religion, bah humbug!
I was raised a Catholic and received a Catholic education. Over the years my belief in God has wavered back and forth from believing to not believing. I want to believe in God but logically thinking it doesn't make any sense to me anymore and evolution/natural selection does.
When I question believers about the existence/proof of God I am always told the same "You have to have faith". What is Faith? Faith is a belief that an idea or a statement is the true without any proof. Faith isn't rational, it is a belief that something exists that you can't prove. All religions ask you to have faith in the existence of their God/God's and if you live according to the rules of the said religion that you will spend your eternity in heaven/bliss. And where do these rules come from? Usually from a book written by man/woman with an agenda to get you to follow their beliefs and contribute to their church and if you don't you will perish in hell. Scum bag's like Jerry Falwell preaching to the poor that they need to contribute more because if they don't they are robbing from God. That is total bullshit!
Most war's are fought in the name of God and religious beliefs. Million's of people over the centuries have killed their fellow human being all in the name of God and their beliefs, why? Is this what a loving God would want? May the best man win?
The God of my Catholic upbringing actually allowed his servant's the Catholic priest's to molest innocent children, he lets millions suffer from starvation and disease every day. A Supreme being that could prevent much of the horror that goes on in this world, yet he hide's himself and asks us to have faith and that it's all for a greater purpose.
I want to believe, I want to feel like I have a purpose but I don't. Logically thinking I can't help believing in Natural Selection and that mankind is on a path of self destruction. We will eventually destroy ourselvesand the whole process of evolution/natural selection will start over. We have become "too smart for our britches".

Most war's are fought in the name of God and religious beliefs. Million's of people over the centuries have killed their fellow human being all in the name of God and their beliefs, why? Is this what a loving God would want? May the best man win?
The God of my Catholic upbringing actually allowed his servant's the Catholic priest's to molest innocent children, he lets millions suffer from starvation and disease every day. A Supreme being that could prevent much of the horror that goes on in this world, yet he hide's himself and asks us to have faith and that it's all for a greater purpose.
I want to believe, I want to feel like I have a purpose but I don't. Logically thinking I can't help believing in Natural Selection and that mankind is on a path of self destruction. We will eventually destroy ourselvesand the whole process of evolution/natural selection will start over. We have become "too smart for our britches".

Sad Day...
Gail & I drove mom to hospital yesterday and spent a few hours with dad. He is heavily medicated and doesn't seem to be in any pain. He also seems to be in pretty good spirits although he does seem worried. The doctor visited while I was there and he was really surprised that his primary hadn't suggested surgery. My father had been complaining about not being able to eat for months now, has lost about 20lbs. and less than six weeks had a colonoscopy and endoscopy. He was told that he had a Haital Hernia but surgery was not even recommended. Considering the severity of the Haital Hernia the doctor at RI Hospital was very surprised and stated my father was very lucky he did not burst his aorta artery and bleed to death.
It is very different for me seeing my dad in this condition and hard to deal with. It is usually me sitting in the hospital bed. I never really had to look at the family members perspective when I am in the hospital and thought how difficult it is for them. So maybe this will be a good experience for me and I will be more considerate when my family visits me in the hospital in the future.
